St. John's was opened in 1963 by Bishop McGhee. At the time of the opening, the then parish priest, Canon Joseph Maxwell wrote an article for the brochure which was produced at the time.

When you enter the chapel through the porch shown on the left of the image above, you will pass by two holy water fonts and a plaque commemorating the laying of the foundation stone in 1962 by the then Bishop of Galloway, Bishop McGee. This will bring you to the area shown below.

This picture shows the choir loft and the pipe organ from the sanctuary with the porch area below the choir loft. There are two stained glass windows which bisect the gable end of the chapel.

Baptismal Stained Glass The lower of the two windows depicts the descent of the Holy Spirit at Baptism along with an image of a Baptismal Candle and an anchor, another symbol of the Sacrament.

When the chapel was originally built the baptismal font stood in front of this window but it was later moved to a position nearer the sanctuary.

St. John The window in the choir loft above the Baptismal window depicts St. John, the patron saint of the Parish.

He is shown recoiling from the chalice when it is offered to him.

If you stand beside the baptistry window and walk down the centre aisle, you will see the sanctuary as depicted in the picture shown below.

Another view of the sanctuary, this time from the choir loft is shown below and shows a wider image of the chapel with the entrance to the sacristy on the left of the picture..

One of the unusual features of the chapel is that there are only two brick walls (at both gable ends), the sides of the chapel consist of stained and frosted glass windows. This is made all the more remarkable when one considers that there are no pillars supporting the roof of the chapel, instead there are a number of laminated trusses which form inverted V shapes in parallel with the canopy above the crucifix in the above picture.

These windows and the baptismal font may be seen in the second part of the guided tour.
